For the system to work most effectively, these marks should be pointed upwards. The check valves have white marks on the “top” side. When first using your pump, placing the leather cups in water for a few minutes will allow them to conform to the diameter of the pump barrel and work more effectively. When wet, these cups will seat in the barrel of the pump.

I am thinking I could use leather for this, but I have questions: I need a "gasket" for the rectangle that will fit inside the face frame to give me a seal against the face frame. It will be stacked on a slightly larger one that sits on the face frame and the both sit on the original lid. The "lid" will step down to fit inside the face frame. You can see the outer box, then the liner with a face frame. I am converting a shipping crate into a humidor.
